Statuses, updates, posts: while they may let you know what a friend is doing, they don’t have the ability to inform exactly where they are. Just when you thought Facebook couldn’t put you in even closer contact with your friends, they went ahead and introduced the Places feature: mobile GPS technology that announces an exact location upon clicking “check in”.

Similar to services such as Foursquare and Gowalla, Places is available immediately through Facebook’s iPhone app and other advanced mobile devices. Users looking to announce their location simply tap “check in” and are able to view a list of nearby places; they then choose the place that matches where they are. They have the ability to write down what they are doing at that location (as well as what they think about it) and a story appears on friends’ new feeds as well as Recent Activity section on the page for that place.

Facebook’s overall goal with this feature is to not only inform friends of where they are, but to also learn if their friends are nearby at the same time. By writing down details of the place, others are able to view where the writer was days or even years ago. In addition to a single user checking in, the “tag” feature is available for linking others to that location as well (people can tag friends only if the taggers themselves check in to the location too).

The con side to this exciting new feature, however, is safety concerns; how is it safe to inform everyone on your friends list of your location? Facebook’s solution: check-ins will appear only to users’ Facebook friends as a default, and users have the ability to trim the recipients list to specific friends only.

And so there you have it: the innovative world of Facebook expanding yet again.

If you attend a number of networking events for the Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce, gs SCENE, or another local group you probably leave the function with a stack of business cards and ask yourself, now what do I do with them? For many people they end up in a pile on their desk, buried in a purse/briefcase, or somewhere in the car. If you have a Smartphone you can load them into your phone quickly without having to type in all the data, so the business card data can go with you anywhere. To load the cards quickly you will need to download an app for your Smartphone. The app makes your Smartphone camera into scanner. There are currently business card reader applications available for BlackBerrys and iPhones. SHAPE services offers one of the most widely uses and easy to use business card reader applications. The applications allow you to review the scanned data before it is imported into your phone. It is important to follow the exact directions for the applications such as turning off the flash to ensure the business card scanning correctly. The applications allow you to get that stack of your desk and make use of all those connections your making!

Smartphones, they aren’t just for work anymore. Now it seems everybody’s got them now from Middle Schoolers to Grandparents. Smartphones allow you to do most of the things you to your computer without needing the computer or access to wifi. Right now the Smartphone world is dominated by Apple’s i-Phone and Research in Motion’s BlackBerry. With so many people now having “virtual offices” the need for a Smartphone is greater than ever. Websites now need to be compatible with mobile browsers to avoid frustrating users. Many major brands offer mobile versions of their website which are more stripped down and able to load faster and be viewed easier on mobile browsers.

Smartphones allow the downloading of many different types of applications for use on the phone. One of the main application categories for Smartphones are social networking applications to keep up with social networking on the go. Social networking giant Facebook has applications available for iPhones, Palms, Sonys, BlackBerrys, Nokias, Androids, Windows Mobile, and Sidekicks. The mobile application of Facebook allows status updates, wall posts, photo uploading, message sending, and notifications of activity. MySpace, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube also have applications for many smart phones. Applications are also available for everything from Microsoft Office tools, to games, radio stations, to weather updates.

Microsoft has previously been a player in the Smartphone world, but has made a major push into the current market with the release of, Windows Phone 7 Series, a completely rebranded Windows Mobile. The new mobile Operating Software is being introduced at Mobile World Congress 2010 in Barcelona, Spain.

The changes are invisible from the start with familiar start screen gone and it’s a place tiles that scroll and be customized by the user. The new OS is very focused on social networking and the ability to combine multiple social networks. In the contacts pages updates can be shown from multiple networks for the same contact. The software will also connect with Xbox Live, featuring live game and avatars. Keep at look out for Windows Phone 7 Series devices hitting stores later this year.

Facebook, its everywhere now! The site was initially created in 2004 for college students and required an e-mail address from specific schools to join the site. In September of 2006 the site was opened to the public and grew tremendously thereafter. Now babies, college students, business professionals, stay home moms and grandmas are all on the social networking giant. There are currently over 350 million active members on facebook. Some fun facts about facebook are there more than 33 million users update their statuses each day, over 2.5 billion photos are uploaded each month, and the average user spends 55 minutes on day on the site.

The site is not just for sharing status updates, wall posts, and pictures anymore. Facebook is now a huge tool in online marketing. A great thing about facebook is it offers both free and paid options for marketing. Business can buy ads on facebook, create free friend pages, or free fan pages to reach their desired demographic. Fan pages are the latest way to market a person, team, business, place, event, or product. A great example of a fan page is the Myrtle Beach fan page, which is run by Interactivity Marketing, and has over a 146,000 fans with interaction on a daily basis. Fan pages allow you to add basic information, photos, allow discussion with fans, and custom tabs let you create your own page with in facebook. Some of the fan pages with custom tabs are JCrew, LeAnn Rimes, BlackBerry, and Dell Computers.

Facebook marketing can be used for everything from selling a car or home, posting a job opening, offering a special facebook only discount, or having contests to name new products. For facebook and all other social media marketing to work effectively new content ranging from status updates to pictures need to be added on a regular basis to interact with the audience and create reasons for becoming a fan. A good way to create interaction is to post a question which requires more than a yes or no answer. This will allow fans to interact with you and other fans of the page.
